Barbara Pancoast Barkley, age 75, of the Neck District, Cambridge, MD, died Tuesday morning, February 16, 2010 at home after a short illness.
Born Barbara Ann Pancoast near Washington, PA on Febraury 21, 1934, she was the only child of the late William R. and Ella Pancoast. After growing up in Elizabeth, PA, Barbara graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1956 with a degree in biology.
She became a science teacher and administrator in schools in Ohio, Maryland, the District of Columbia and Maine. Later she attained a master’s degree in special education. Barbara was passionate about being an advocate for her students and their families.
Barbara loved being on the water, especially sailboats and sailboat racing. A lifelong football fan, she lived to watch her beloved Pittsburgh Steelers.
After retirement, Barbara moved to Maryland’s Eastern Shore and enjoyed being busy and active in her community. She was a dedicated volunteer of the Friends of Blackwater and was an active Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliarian where she served as first vice president, an Emergency Room liaison and Robin Hood Shop attendant in Cambridge. She also volunteered on the committee of The Nathan of Dorchester.
Her marriage to Dean Volmer ended in divorce. Barbara is survived by her four children Terry Volmer and son-in-law Richard Levy of Cambridge, MD, Karen Brien and son-in-law Richard of Arnold, MD, William Dean “Tiger” Volmer of Columbia, MD, and Jeff Volmer and daughter-in-law Anna of Columbia, MD; and three grandchildren Michael Brien, Christopher Brien and Justin Randall.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 20th at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Service will be led by family and friends. Cremation was entrusted to Mid Shore Cremation Center, Cambridge. Inurnment will be held privately at a later date.
