Betty Lee Travers, age 84, of Cambridge, MD, departed this life Thursday morning, July 23, 2009 at Chesapeake Woods Center, Cambridge with her family by her side.
Born on November 17, 1924 in Cambridge, MD, she was the daughter of the late James Irving Hurley and Adell S. Latham Hurley.
On November 1, 1942 she married her husband and life time friend Walter Lee Travers, Sr.
Mrs. Travers was educated in Dorchester County and was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In her younger years she was a Den Mother, a Brownie and a Girl Scout Leader.
Betty and her husband Walter owned and operated Jim’s Drive Inn in Cambridge, one of the last curb side restaurants around. After retiring she continued to devote her time to her family and volunteer work within the community.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Cambridge. Mrs. Travers was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Cambridge Elks Lodge 1272.
Surviving besides her husband of 66 years, Walter Lee, is a son Walter L. Travers, Jr. and his wife Judy; a daughter Diane (Donnie) Fitzhugh and her husband Logan; three grandchildren Kevin S. Travers and his wife Sherry, Deborah A. Webster and her husband Brad, Laura Lyons and her husband Philip; six great-grandchildren Kyle, Grant, and Ian Powley, Halie Davidson and Gabrielle and Joshua Travers; a special niece Bonnie Lassiter and her husband Greg; brother-in-law Owen Hess; extended family Gloria Cephas.
Preceding her in death besides her parents were numerous aunts; uncles; and a sister June Hess, who departed this life one year ago, July 22, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 27th at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., where the family will also receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Delmer Willey. Private burial will be held Tuesday, July 28th at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD, where the grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
