CECILIA E. WINDSOR

Cecilia Emma Windsor, age 93, of Cambridge, died early Friday morning, January 30, 2009 at Dorchester General Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

Born on November 12, 1915, in Taylors Island, MD, she was the daughter of the late Martin C.F. Schnoor and Emma Marx Schnoor, German immigrants to the United States in the late 1800’s.

Cecilia was raised in Cambridge and was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1932. She attended and graduated from The Marinello School of Cosmetology, Baltimore, MD, Class of 1933.

In 1935, she married Theodore E. Fischer and from this union a daughter was born, Beverly Jane Fischer.

On January 9, 1966, Cecilia married Cambridge Chiropractor, Dr. Guy F. Windsor. A gentleman full of accomplishments, including being a former Cambridge City Councilman and avid golfer; he died on September 9, 1986.

During World War II, Cecilia and family lived and worked in Baltimore. When she returned to Cambridge, she worked in the beauty salon of Gladys Cannon. She later worked for Ethel Yates in the Arcade Building. When Cecilia purchased that business she changed the name to the Arcade Beauty Salon.

Since the early 1960’s, Cecilia was the owner and proprietor of Cecille’s Beauty Salon, Inc. on Muir Street in Cambridge. She was active in her profession until five months preceding her death. After seventy-six years, the business continues today under the original name owned and managed by her daughter and best friend Beverly Shelly who has worked by her side for many years. Cecilia had an inept sense for color and style in her field. Over the course of Cecilia’s career she trained many women who became professionals in the field of cosmetology.

In 1998 she celebrated with her family and friends “Sixty Five Years of Beautiful Service” at the Cambridge Yacht Club. On November 5, 2005 Cecilia's daughter, Beverly and granddaughter, Deana honored her with a 90th birthday jubilee at the Cambridge Country Club. Cecilia joyously celebrated with nearly 100 family and friends and received commemorations from Maryland Governor, Robert Ehrlich and former President of the United States, George W. Bush.

Cecilia had a great love and caring for her family, both immediate and extended. She had a wonderful and loving relationship with her two great-grandsons and took exceptional care of them until recently, due to health.

Cecilia has been a lifetime, devoted and faithful member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and served in many capacities including past president of the Women’s Guild as well as various other committees. At 93, she is one of the oldest members of what was formally known as Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church. In 1957, through multiple church mergers, the church changed its name to Immanuel United Church of Christ.

Cecilia had an innate and tenacious flair for fashion and appreciation for art. In years past she participated in displaying her art at the Dorchester Showcase and Dorchester Educators Art Show. She loved gardening and cooking, especially authentic German style cooking.

Cecilia was an ardent supporter of local, civic organizations and causes. She held membership in the National and State of Maryland Cosmetologists Associations. She also was an officer at the state and local levels and was instrumental in forming continuing education classes held at Salisbury State College. She was also a Charter Member and member of the Cambridge Quota Club, Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 91, Dorchester Democratic Club, Eastern Shore Hospital Auxiliary, Dorchester County Historical Society, Friends of Blackwater Wildlife Refuge, Cambridge Yacht Club, Cambridge Country Club, and the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce. On April 28, 2006 Cecilia was the recipient of the Golden Stitch Award presented by the Dorchester Chamber of Commerce- an award based on her life long personal and professional devotion to her home, thus reflected as one of the strong golden threads that holds together the loving tapestry that is the Dorchester County community.

Surviving is her daughter and son-in-law Beverly and Raymond H. Shelly, Jr. of Cambridge, MD; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law Deana and Mark Kozak; two great-grandsons Jaden Windsor Kozak and Evan David Kozak also of Cambridge, MD, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and many friends.

Cecilia is preceded in death by her eight siblings Martha Schnoor Luthy, Henry Schnoor, Otto Schnoor, Martin Schnoor, Max Schnoor, Sr., Richard Schnoor, Emma Schnoor, Elizabeth Schnoor Henry.

The family will receive friends at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. on Sunday, February 1st from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., where at 3:00 p.m. The Rev. Douglas Albert, friend and former pastor, will lead prayer.

Funeral services will be held at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 Whitehall Road and Rt. 50, Cambridge, Monday, February 2nd at 11:00 a.m. with The Rev. Joan Evans, Pastor officiating. Burial will follow at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.

Pallbearers will be Mark Kozak, Max Schnoor, Jr., Frederick Schnoor, James M. Henry, John Luthy III, Daniel Luthy, William Becraft, and Phillip Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas B. Windsor, Paul Luthy, Dr. William Bair, Calvin Malkus, Milton Malkus Jr., and Theodore Malkus.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that expressions of sympathy be made by making offerings to Cecilia’s church, Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 White Hall Rd., Cambridge, MD 21613.
