Charles E. Shockley, 95, of Hoopers Island passed away Saturday, May 16, 2015 at UMSMC at Dorchester.
Born on Christmas Day 1919, he was a son of the late Everett and Ruby Creighton Shockley.
Charles grew up on Hoopers Island and even as a young lad was always involved with the waterman’s lifestyle. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, May 30, 1941 and served his country in the Pacific Theatre. Charles was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in action. He returned to his Hoopers Island home after being discharged July 27, 1945.
Charles continued his career as a waterman and then became part owner and operator of A.E. Phillips and Son’s Seafood business. He also was the Captain of the oyster buy boat, the “Rena A. Callow” , on the Chesapeake for many years.
Charles was married to the former Liily Mae Johnson. Lilly passed away October 24, 1965. Later he married Lois Hughes. She passed away November 28, 2001.
Charles was an avid fisherman and loved to take all his family out on fishing trips whenever he could. Even in his later years, he never lost his desire to fish and give to family and friends the days catch. Hoopers Island was always his home until 2006 when he moved to Secretary and lived with his very special caregivers Jack and Doreen Trego.
Survivng is his daughter Sharon Fitzhugh (Emory) of Woolford; son Tony Shockley (Robin) of Linkwood; brothers Leon Shockley of Cambridge and Dorsey Shockley of Hoopers Island; granddaughters Erika Walbridge (Jason) of Detroit, MI, Tabi Simmons (Matt) of Church Creek, Amanda Hailey (Jack) of Brownsville, TX; great grandson's Devin Shockley and Colton Hailey and great grandaughter Emma Hailey; step children Judy Robinson (Jeff) of Torrance, CA, Jean Adams of Sharptown, MD and Jay Lewis of Bridgeville, DE; step grandchildren Michele LeCates, Delmar, MD, Cathy Vowles (Matt), Los Angeles, CA , Robbie Wheatley, San Franciso, CA , Eric Stanley, Katie and Kelsey Adams, Cambridge, MD; step great grandchildren Jack, Grace and Lily Vowles; special friends Ruth Moore of Madison, Art Wheatley of Hudson; along with several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wives are brothers Rodger and Carl Shockley; sisters Laura Shockley and Doris Aaron.
A graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2015 beginning 1:00 p.m. at Dorchester Memorial Park with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow.
