Clarence Oswald Pritchett, 89, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 20, 2014 at UMSMC at Easton.
He was born in Bishops Head, Maryland on March 12, 1925 to the late Iris Bramble Pritchett and Clyde Oswald Pritchett.
Living his whole life in Bishops Head, he graduated from Crapo High School.
Clarence married Nina Belle Jones on October 5, 1946 and during that same year he opened his family business, “Pritchett’s Grocery”, the local “Mom and Pop” store. During the early years both he and Nina also worked at Phillips Packing Company and cracked crab claws. His strong work ethics and determination to provide for his family and community served him well. He was in many other areas of business as well, such as: Postmaster for forty-four years, bus contractor, real estate and fisheries.
Mr. Pritchett was the last surviving charter member of the Lakes and Straits Volunteer Fire Department.
Church was a major part of his life. Early on he attended the Pilgrim Holiness Church and St. Thomas Methodist Church in Bishops Head and was a past member of Gideons. Clarence was the heart of Wingate United Methodist Church and a pillar of his community. He was a Sunday School Teacher, Lay Leader, Treasurer, Chairman of Administrative Board at Wingate Methodist and had represented St. Thomas Charge at Conference for forty years.
He loved to sing in church and was often invited to other churches in Maryland and Delaware to sing with his wife and daughter. They were known as the “Pritchett Family”.
Clarence loved meeting new people and they were drawn to him by his smile and enthusiasm for life. He had a special interest in politics and all will remember him with his trade mark fedora.
Surviving him is a daughter Deborah P. Hayward (Mike Dawson); grandson Charles Armond “Chuckie” Hayward Jr. (Nicole Douglas); granddaughter Pamela Michelle Hayward Manley (Brandon); great grandchildren Aiden & Alexis Hayward; step-sisters Effie Mae Elzey (Levin), Linda Insley (Robert); step-brother Howard “Bubby” Creighton (Ovetta) and several cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends that are like family.
Preceding him in death besides his parents, was his wife Nina; his beloved son Clarence Kevin Pritchett and step-mother Dorothea Pritchett.
A visitation will be held on Sunday evening June 29, 2014 from 6 till 9 p.m. at the Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., Cambridge.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 30, 2014 beginning 1 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will also receive friends the hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Rev. David L. Kreek, Pastor Dave Stewart, Rev. Mary Ann Farnell and Rev. Mike LaClair. Interment will follow in the Dorchester Memorial Park Cemetery, Cambridge.
Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Manley, Tommy Robinson, Timmy Robinson, Jay Robinson, Carlos Bowens, Tommy Collins, Bruce Meekins, Jay Newcomb and Donnie Simmons.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Dawson, Melvin Pritchett, Eddie Howard, Ray Pritchett, Dave Nickerson, Dr. MaryAnn Moore, Dr. Brendon Paltoo and Dr. Anish Hinduja.
