Doris Estelle Thomas, 90, of Cambridge passed away peacefully Monday, March 18, 2013 at her home.
Born in Town Point on February 23, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Darcy and Naomi Insley Hurley. Doris graduated from Cambridge High School and on April 24, 1943 became the bride of Elvin D. Thomas.
Doris was first and foremost devoted to her family. Her pride of her husband and two children was very evident. She was a supportive wife in the many organizations and community affairs that her husband was involved in. Elvin passed away September 13, 2005.
The Thomas’ were lifetime members of Friendship United Methodist Church, Cambridge Yacht Club and Cambridge Lodge #1272 B.P.O.E. Elks. Doris had been active in the Dorchester General Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are her two children, daughter Brenda C. Cohen of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and son E. Dail Thomas II and wife Karin of Fort Washington, MD; two grandchildren Lauren Nicole Thomas and Nathaniel Dail Thomas, a sister Lula May Phillips and her husband Thomas Dewey Phillips; her devoted niece Gail Todd; and a special caregiver Sherry Hastings.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013 beginning 1 p.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church, Cambridge. Officiating will be Certified Lay Speaker Chris Farnell. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, March 20, 2013 from 6 till 8 p.m. at the Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., Cambridge.
Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Todd, Jr., Randy Todd, William Edward Blackburn, Jr., Gary Phillips, Chris Blackburn and Chris Rusin.
Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Todd and Thomas Phillips.
In lieu of flowers memorial offerings in memory of Doris can be made to the Friendship United Methodist Church, c/o Doris Weber, 5163 Maple Dam Rd., Cambridge MD 21613.
