Edith “Edie” Keyes Riggins, 93, of Cambridge, MD passed away April 4, 2014 at Mallard Bay Care Center, Cambridge.
Born April 3, 1921 at Morris Neck, she was a daughter of the late John and Edith Mills Keyes.
For over fifty years she owned, along with her husband the late Rubin S. “John” Riggins, the Choptank Inn. The restaurant was originally located on Route 50 in Cambridge and then moved to Easton in 1963. “Edie” was a very independent woman. She was a hard worker, an excellent cook, and was very involved in the operation of their business. They sold the business in the late 1990’s. “John” passed away in 2001.
Edie was a caring and giving person. She was dedicated to her family and to the VFW. She also had a special fondness for animals, her dogs Inky Dink, Dancie, Lady Bug and cat Pumpkin, just to name a few.
Active in civic organizations, she was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #7460, serving as past Auxiliary President. She also was a member of Cambridge Moose Lodge, American Legion Post #91 and Cambridge Elks.
Surviving is a brother Howard Keyes and wife Helen of Cambridge; half-sister Betty of Cambridge; daughter-in-law Janice Hughes of Madison; special nephew Sidney Keyes and wife Alice of Cambridge; step-daughter Pamela Brohawn and husband Charles “Wiggy” of Woolford; step-sons Lindy Riggins and wife Debbie of Sharptown, Rubin John Riggins and wife Lois of Kapolei, Hawaii; granddaughter Shelly Jones and husband Gordy of Church Creek; along with numerous other nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was a son Kenneth” Scotty” Hughes; sister Ann Grasmick; brothers Clarence, John, Stokes and Travers Keyes; and a step-son Paul M. Riggins.
There will be a visitation Tuesday evening, April 8, 2014 from 6 till 8 p.m. at the Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., 308 High Street, Cambridge.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday beginning 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating.
Interment will follow at Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock with committal service starting at 1 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be David Keyes, Kevin Keyes, Gordy Jones, Patrick Hughes, Steve Abbott, Jeff Keyes, Charles Brohawn, Jr. and Jimmy Keyes.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sidney Keyes and Troy Brohawn.
