EDNA LEWIS WHEATLEY WAS BORN ON FEBRUARY 15, 1911 AT WINGATE, MARYLAND, THE OLDEST DAUGHTER OF JAMES MATTHEW AND FLOY WINDSOR LEWIS. SHE WENT TO JOIN HER HEAVENLY FAMILY ON NOVEMBER 15, 2015. SHE DIED AT THE SOMERSET ASSISTED LIVING ON LAKE SAUNDERS, TAVARES, FL, WHERE SHE HAD LIVED FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS.
EDNA MARRIED MALCOLM OTIS WHEATLEY AT WINGATE ON CHRISTMAS EVE 1930. THEY HAD TWO DAUGHTERS FLORA LOUISE AND SHIRLEY LORRAINE.THEY CELEBRATED THEIR GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY WITH A RECEPTION AT GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND, WHERE FAMILY AND FRIENDS GATHERED FOR THE FESTIVE EVENT. CAPTAIN MALCOLM PRECEDED HER IN DEATH ON HER BIRTHDAY FEBRUARY 15, 1988.
DURING THEIR LONG LIFE, THEY ENJOYED EACH OF THE BOATS THEY OWNED. THEY GATHERED CLOSE FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO RACE THE "KATHRYN" ON CHESAPEAKE BAY APPRECIATION DAYS AND WON A FEW TROPHIES ALONG THE WAY. THEIR FAVORITE WORK BOAT WAS THE "EDNA W" AND THEN BEFORE RETIREMENT, THE "VALMARJON", NAMED FOR THEIR GRANDCHILDREN, VALERIE, MARC AND JON BECAME THE BOAT FOR FISHING, CRABBING, SPENDING NIGHTS ON THE WATER ENJOYING LIFE TO ITS FULLEST.
EDNA WAS EDUCATED IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL OF DORCHESTER COUNTY AND JOINED OTHER HOMEMAKERS OF DORCHESTER ATTENDING THE SUMMER SCHOOLS THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND. SHE HAD FOND MEMORIES OF DORMITORY LIFE WITH FELLOW HOMEMAKERS IN THE COUNTY AND STATE OF MARYLAND.
MRS. WHEATLEY WAS A LOYAL AND ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE WINGATE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH WHERE SHE HELD MANY POSITIONS INCLUDING CHURCH SCHOOL AND BIBLE SCHOOL TEACHER, A MEMBER AND OFFICER FOR THE WOMEN'S SOCIETY OF CHRISTIAN SERVICE. SHE WAS ALSO A MEMBER AND PRESIDENT OF THE RIVERS EDGE HOMEMAKERS.
SHE WAS A MEMBER OF THE LAKES AND STRAITS FIRE COMPANY AUXILIARY. SHE AND MALCOLM WERE CHARTER MEMBERS OF THE LAKES AND STRAITS FIRE COMPANY AND DONATED PART OF THEIR FRONT GARDEN FOR THE PROJECT. SHE LOVED LIVING NEXT TO THE "FIRE HOUSE" AND GREETING VISITORS WHO CAME FOR EVENTS. SHE COULD ALWAYS BE FOUND PREPARING FOOD WHEN SEAFOOD SUPPERS WERE REGULAR FUND RAISERS.
EDNA WAS EMPLOYED BY SEVERAL SEAFOOD COMPANIES AS WELL AS AIRPAX ELECTRONICS.
HER GREAT JOYS WERE GARDENING, CANNING AND FREEZING FOOD, QUILTING, CROCHETING SMALL AND MAJOR PROJECTS SUCH AS BED SPREADS AND TABLE CLOTHS. SHE WAS PROUD TO HAVE MADE QUILTS FOR HER SISTERS, CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN. SHE WAS A GREAT COOK, HAD THE GIFT OF HOSPITALITY AND SHARED HER BLESSINGS WITH FAMILY, FRIENDS AND COMMUNITY.
MRS. WHEATLEY IS SURVIVED BY HER TWO DAUGHTERS, FLORA W. TODD DOSTER AND HER HUSBAND RICHARD W. DOSTER, MOUNT DORA, FL. AND SHIRLEY W. LEAF BEALEFELD AND HER HUSBAND JOHN B. BEALEFELD, SR. CHESTER, MD.
THREE GRANDCHILDREN SURVIVE, MARC WHEATLEY TODD AND HIS WIFE, MARIANNE FORBES TODD, RESIDENTS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, JON MILTON LEWIS TODD, RESIDENT OF TENNESSEE, VALERIE COUGHLIN AND HER HUSBAND MICHAEL COUGHLIN, RESIDENTS OF MARYLAND.
THREE GREAT GRANDSONS SURVIVE, JONATHAN, MICHAEL AND BENJAMIN COUGHLIN, RESIDENTS OF MARYLAND; ONE GREAT GRAND DAUGHTER, ABIGAIL K. TODD, RESIDENT OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
SHE IS ALSO SURVIVED BY BELOVED NIECES AND NEPHEWS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND CARING STEP GRANDCHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES.
SHE WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY LEWIS BROTHERS: WELLER, NORRIS, LEON, EARL, DAVID, JAMES AND OSYLEE AND TWO SISTERS, AUDREY LEWIS WILLEY AND ADELE LEWIS SARVEY.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2015 BEGINNING 12 NOON AT NEWCOMB AND COLLINS FUNERAL HOME, P.A., CAMBRIDGE, MARYLAND WITH REV. DAVID KREEK OFFICIATING. FAMILY WILL RECEIVE FRIENDS AN HOUR PRIOR TO THE SERVICE. BURIAL WILL BE PRIVATE AT DORCHESTER MEMORIAL PARK.
