FREDERICK “WHITEY” JOHNSON
Frederick Edward “Whitey” Johnson, age 90, of Cambridge, MD, died early Tuesday morning, December 23, 2008 at Mallard Bay Care Center, Cambridge, MD.
Born on August 23, 1918 in Bishops Head, Dorchester County, MD, he was the son of the late Charles Goldsborough Johnson and Lena Ruark Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was raised in the South Dorchester and attended Maryland schools.
From July 15, 1941 to September 18, 1945, Mr. Johnson served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and Distinguished Unit Badge.
On January 15, 1949 he married the former Mary Lee Marshall. She died on July 31, 2003.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Mr. Johnson had worked for Phillips Hardware, Herbert Hearn Hardware and Phillips Wholesale. After retirement, he worked at Shiloh Grain Company.
Surviving is a brother and sister-in-law C. Webster Johnson and his wife Kathryn; brother-in-law Russell Mills; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Eleanor and Harold Ruark, all of Cambridge, MD, Jean and Warren McWilliams of Rhodesdale, MD; nieces and nephews Herb Robinson and his wife Barbara, Bing Mills, Donald Mills and his wife Phyllis, Brenda Gubinsky and her husband Lou, Flora Mae Towers and her husband Tom, Doris Mae Robinson and her husband Ted, Sharon and Jerry Taylor, Lena and Ben Delcamp, Jean and Wilbur Lutz, Carolyn Robinson Donna Era and her husband Joe, Deborah Wessells and her husband Craig, Connie Ruark, Thomas Ruark and his wife Suzanne, James Ruark and his wife Eileen; several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were five sisters Magdalene “Maggie” Mills, Doris Marshall and her husband Earle, Lelia Wingate and her husband Mitchell, Margaret Parks and her husband Johnny, Sophie Mills and her husband Herbert; three brothers Brice Johnson and his wife Alice, McCullough Johnson and his wife Maureen and Allen C. “Dick” Johnson; two nephews Fred Robinson and Alton Eugene Wingate.
Funeral services will be held at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., 308 High Street, Cambridge, MD on Saturday, December 27th at 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Richard Prahl and The Rev. Delmer Willey. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
