Jack Steele Smith, age 85, of Linkwood, MD, died Monday morning, January 3, 2011 at his home.
Born on May 23, 1925 in Dorchester County, MD he was the son of the late Harry Smith and Clara Belle Johnson Smith.
He was educated in Dorchester County schools.
Mr. Smith served his country in the United States Army during World War II from April 11, 1945 until he was honorably discharged on December 29, 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He had then served with the Maryland National Guard.
On October 24, 1947 he married the former Katherine “Kitty” Gore. She died on July 31, 2009.
In his earlier years he had worked for The Daily Banner for about twenty years. He then became a self employed carpenter, establishing J&K Builders. He retired in 1993.
Jack was one of the founders of Linkwood-Salem Volunteer Fire Department, where he held life-time membership.
Jack’s hobbies included carving duck decoys, drawing and painting.
Surviving are two daughters Sharon Duvall and her husband James “Birch” Duvall of Cambridge, MD, Jackie Molisani and her husband Nick Molisani of Linkwood, MD; a sister Betty Dennis of Cambridge, MD; grandchildren Nick and Tesha, Kathy and Gary; great-grandchildren Kelli and Matt, Damian, Caraline, Sara, Calyn, and Daniel; a great-great-granddaughter Aubree; nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife were two brothers Andrew Phillips (Maggie), Johnson Phillips (Barbara and Betty); a sister Katherine Wheeler (Bill); and brother-in-law Allen Dennis.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 7th at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be David Tolley, a family friend. Inurnment will be held privately at The Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery at another time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made in Jack’s memory to the Linkwood-Salem Volunteer Fire Dept., PO Box 66, Linkwood, MD 21835.
