Jean Hurley Roche, 90, of Cambridge passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore with her family by her side. Born in Cambridge on October 24, 1924 she was a daughter of the late Allen P. and Henrietta Winifred Turner Hurley of Cambridge.
She graduated from Cambridge High School. She was first employed by the Democrat and News newspaper, later as a legal secretary for attorney V. Calvin Trice, Clarence H. Corkran, Judges C. Burnam Mace and Charles E. Edmondson, and the law firm of Harrington and Merryweather until her retirement. Jean was a member of Grace United Methodist Church for 75 years and the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 91.
Known fondly as “Mimi,” including to the hospital staff at Johns Hopkins during her short stay there, she was a warm, independent, and resourceful woman who always thought of herself second. Always there to help her family and others, she will be missed. She loved to care for her great grandchildren and to cook for friends, neighbors and those in need. Her weekly lunches and Sunday dinners with the family were a regular event right up to the week before she passed.
Preceding Jean in death besides her parents is a son Wade Roche and sisters Phyllis Thompson and Doris Murphy. Surviving is her son Bicky Roche and Debbie Tapper of East New Market; brother Allen T. Hurley of Vienna, grandchildren Wini Roche and husband Mark Hemelt of Havre de Grace, Renee Roche LeMire and husband Mike of Cambridge, Brian Roche and Sarah Abel of Cambridge, and great-grandchildren Connor LeMire, Max LeMire and Michael Wade Roche.
A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held Sunday, June 28, 2015 beginning 2:00 p.m. at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Interment will be private at Dorchester Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jean can be made to Grace United Methodist Church Baraca Class, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, or to the charity of your choice.
