Joan Burton

Joan Myra Davis Burton, 87, formerly of Cambridge, MD passed away early Monday morning, October 1, 2018 at Autumn Lake Healthcare in Chestertown, MD.

Born March 14, 1931 in Baltimore, MD she was the daughter of the late Thomas B. Davis and the late Sarah Russell Davis.

She attended public schools in Baltimore until the family moved to Hagerstown when she was in the 6th grade. She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1948.  While attending high school she met Robert H. Burton.  They married November 6, 1950.  Soon after, they relocated to Cambridge, MD where they raised their 3 children. They were both active in the gas industry through the family owned Cambridge Gas Company.  Mrs. Burton earned her Associates degree in Humanities from Chesapeake College in 1970.

Widowed in July of 1970, she moved to San Diego, California where she went into property management. She returned to Cambridge in the 90s where she continued in that profession until her retirement. In 2003 she moved to Chestertown, MD to live with her daughter.

She was a past member of Quota International of Cambridge, MD and the Cambridge Yacht Club.  While in Chestertown she enjoyed socializing with the Red Hat Ladies.  She also loved preparing bulletin boards in her daughter’s classroom at Kent County High School.

Her hobbies included cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting and crewel. She took great pride in fashioning elaborate afghans to bestow as gifts. She loved preparing dinner and serving it at an elegantly set table. A natural homemaker, she loved doing laundry. Every item perfectly folded; all garments with perfect creases.

Surviving are her children Cynthia Burton Phillips of Chestertown, Robert Henry Burton, Jr. of Church Creek and David Keith Burton (Janet) of Parkersburg, WV, and grandchildren Robert H. Burton III, Robert P. Phillips, Jr, Travis P. Spears, Jonathan K. Burton, David Z. Burton and Teresa F. Burton. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday October 14, 2018 beginning at 1:00 pm at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, Cambridge. A visitation with family and friends will begin one hour prior to the celebration. Rev. Gary S. Hickman will officiate.
