JOAN C. WHEATLEY
Joan Cordrey Wheatley, age 67, of Preston, MD, died Sunday morning, August 17, 2008 at her home.
Born on April 16, 1941 in Cambridge, MD, she was the daughter of the late Jones V. Mills and Margaret Morris Mills. Her father died March 9, 1991 and her mother died on June 16, 1960.
Mrs. Wheatley was a graduate of South Dorchester High School, Class of 1959. She then graduated from Sinai Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1962.
Mrs. Wheatley had an extensive nursing career in Wicomico, Talbot and Dorchester Counties. She had worked part time at the Dixon House, Wicomico Nursing Home, and Chesapeake Woods. She had worked full time at Eastern Shore Hospital Center from 1962 until her retirement 1992.
Besides being known for her nursing career, Mrs. Wheatley was known for her caring manner towards others and for being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She loved pets and was an avid reader.
On January 7, 1972 she married The Rev. Leonard H. Wheatley, Jr.
Mrs. Wheatley was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, Preston, MD.
Surviving is her husband of 36 years, The Rev. Leonard H. Wheatley, Jr. of Preston, MD; two daughters Teri C. Hubbard and her husband Bryan of Hurlock, MD, Krista Love and her husband David of Preston, MD; a sister Deanna L. Mills of Linkwood, MD; two brothers Danny Mills of Cambridge, MD, Jay Mills of East New Market, MD; two grandchildren Nate Hubbard and Erin Hubbard; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents was her first husband William H. Cordrey who died on May 3, 1970 and her daughter Rhonda V. Cordrey who died on August 14, 1985.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Wednesday, August 20th at Bethesda United Methodist Church, Preston, MD, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Gary Moore and The Rev. Ike Ledger.
Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD.
Pallbearers will be Chad Mills, Samuel Yockey, Kevin Mills, Kevin Yockey, David Yockey and Brandon C. Morris.
Honorary Pallbearer will be Ryan Mills.
Expressions of sympathy may be made by either sending flowers or making memorial offerings in Mrs. Wheatley’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
