Joann Colein Gumpman, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, peacefully passed away on November 18, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on February 16, 1938, she grew up in Linthicum, MD, Anne Arundel County and graduated from Brooklyn Park High School in 1956. After graduating she worked for General Elevators in Baltimore. In 1964 Colein moved to Hurlock and worked at the Quick Shop.
Colein dedicated her professional life to caring for others, retiring after a long and rewarding career with the University of Maryland Health Care System. She made a lasting impact during her time at both Dorchester General Hospital and Easton Memorial Hospital.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She loved spending summers with her cousins Libby and Charlie Helms in Wildwood, NJ. Whether she was playing card games with loved ones, bowling, soaking up the sun at the beach, or enjoying cruises with her daughters, Colein cherished every moment of togetherness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ethel and Joseph A. Gumpman; three brothers, Joseph D. Gumpman, Sr., Leonard Gumpman, and Jerome F. Gumpman; and her daughter, Kimberly Shilow.
Colein is survived by her loving children, Joann Colein Hall (Tom) and Dwayne Abt (Kathy); her five grandchildren, Kraig Thomas, Ryan Bell, Stephanie Abt Brohawn, Stephen Abt, and Scott Abt; thirteen great-grandchildren who were the light of her life.
Services to celebrate Colein’s life will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024 beginning 1:00 pm. at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home in Cambridge, MD with Pastor Steve Bloodsworth officiating. A visitation will be held from 12:00-1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Colein’s name may be made to Talbot Hospice Foundation, 586 Cynwood Drive, Easton, MD 21601 or Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21801.
Colein will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her warmth, kindness, and joyful spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
