Leona M. Mills, age 88, of Cambridge, MD, died Monday night, April 5, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital after a short stay at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.
Born on July 17, 1921 in Cambridge, she was the daughter of the late Luke H. Messick, Sr. and the late Marguerite Hurley Messick. She was a graduate of Cambridge High School.
On September 20, 1942 she married Galen W. Mills. He died on October 27, 2000. Mr. Mills was a boat builder craftsman and founded Mills Marine Railway.
In 1950 she worked in the bookkeeping department of Peoples Savings and Loan and retired in 1983 from Signet Bank.
Mrs. Mills was a member of the Beckwith United Methodist Church. She served with the United Methodist Women and had been a faithful Sunday School teacher.
Mrs. Mills was a member of the Neck District Volunteer Fire Dept. and a lifetime member of the Cambridge VFW Post 7460.
“Aunt Onie”, as she was affectionately known by her family, loved hosting many Messick Family Re-Unions and Easter Egg Hunts. Ceramics were her favorite craft and she always made sure her family had ceramic mementos. She also enjoyed bus trips and traveling in general.
Surviving is a sister-in-law Doris C. Messick of Cambridge, MD; nieces and nephews Herbert H. Messick and his wife Deena of Cambridge, MD, Gale M. Thomas and her husband Ron of Quantico, MD, Sue Harper of Cambridge, MD, Luann Jackson and her husband Tony of Hurlock, MD; ten great-nieces and nephews; and numerous great-great-nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband were two brothers Perry H. Messick and Luke H. Messick, Jr. and a sister-in-law Betty T. Messick.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening, April 8th from 6 to 8 p.m. at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 9th at the funeral home with The Rev. Pam Bockart, Pastor of the Choptank Charge officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
