Loraine Hall Todd, 91, of Fishing Creek, Maryland passed away peacefully Monday, February, 3, 2014 at William Hill Health Care Center, Easton.
She was born to the late Russell and Pauline Parks Hall on February 5, 1922 at Fishing Creek. Maryland. Loraine graduated from Hoopers Island High School. She received her teaching degree from Maryland State Normal School, Salisbury where she graduated first in her class. Later, she received he BS degree and Master’s equivalency from the University of Maryland. She married Rufus M. Todd in 1948 and they lived together in Fishing Creek. Loraine and her husband loved to travel and were able to explore most of the country.
Loraine taught elementary school in Ellicott City, Maryland before returning to Hoopers Island School. Later, she served as prinicipal at that same school. Loraine retired from teaching in 1967. She was passionate about making a difference for her students. She is remembered by her pupils, still remaining on Hoopers Island, as a strict but caring teacher with high expectations for all her students.
Loraine co owned Russell Hall Seafood with her father and worked in the family business every summer until 1996.
Loraine was a member of the Hoisier United Methodist Church in Fishing Creek and the Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge.
A public- spirited philanthropist, Loraine openheartedly supported many charities in the local community. She generously donated to the Rufus M. Todd and Loraine Hall Center for the Performing Arts at the Chesapeake Community College, Wye Mills; the Choptank River Lighthouse Replica, Cambridge; the Dorchester General Hospital Foundation, Cambridge; and the Radiology and Oncology Department of Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.
She is survived by her husband Rufus M. Todd and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visitation will be held Friday evening, February 7, 2014 from 6 till 8 p.m. at the Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., 308 High Street, Cambridge.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 beginning 12 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, Cambridge. A visitation will also be held 11:30 a.m. till the service.
Officiating the service will be Rev. Doug Ridley and Pastor Christina Blake.
Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge.
Serving as pallbearers will be Vance Gregory Hobbs, Vance Todd, Aaron Powley, Robin Hall, Brian Hall, Harry Phillips, Jay Newcomb and Joseph Ruark.
Honorary pallbearer will be Virgil George Hobbs, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial donations be made to Dorchester General Hospital Foundation, c/o Ida Baker, P.O. Box 439, Cambridge, MD.
