Marianne Carter Lowry
August 14, 1928 - August 30, 2024
Marianne C. Lowry, 96, of St. Michaels, Maryland died peacefully on August 30th.
She leaves her husband of 69 years “Ted” Harvie Edmund Lowry, Jr, and children Stephenson Lowry, Tedde Lowry Best, Priscilla Anne Lowry, Samantha Lowry Eckert (Kevin); 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; nieces and a nephew.
She is preceded in death by her brother Robert “Bob" and sons Peter Carter and Adam Jonas.
Marianne was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1928 to the late Walter Speilberger and Marjorie Carter Browne.
She attended childhood schools in NYC and Boston.
Marianne became an Arthur Murray dance instructor in Boston where she met Ted. They married in 1955, moved to Westport Ct in 1956 where they raised their 5 children. A passionate animal lover, Marianne rescued and cared for many animals as beloved family pets including cats, a raccoon, snakes and monkeys.
Marianne enjoyed many years on her little boat in Long Island Sound and at Westport beaches where she’d fish, clam and crab. She especially loved hearing the surf crash and the wind blow during thunderstorms while safe inside the family camper.
After retiring with her husband to St. Michaels, MD in 1987, she was a volunteer for many local organizations, several of which she held office positions:
St. Michaels Women’s Club, The St. Mary’s Square Museum, Miles River Yacht Club Ladies Auxiliary, The Waterfowl Festival, St. Michaels Library, co-founded the St. Michaels Community Center (Bay Hundred Task Force) and co-created the Talbot Mentors. She held several offices for the local AARP Chapter. She volunteered weekly at the St. Michaels Community Center thrift shop (The Treasure Cove).
She loved to travel and had many adventures throughout the US and Europe.
Marianne was a skilled Bridge and card player, avid reader and animal lover. Passionate for dancing, she’d jump at the chance to learn a new line dance or teach steps from swing to waltz. She kept sharp and active with hand-crafts, daily puzzles and games with friends and family. Always gracious with a warm smile and a sparkle in her eye, she greeted friends, new and old and welcomed them with kind words.
She will be missed by her family and friends for her genuine compassion, kindness, beauty, quick wit and fun-loving spirit.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements entrusted to Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, Cambridge, MD.
