MARY W. MATTHEWS

Mary W. Matthews, age 87, of Easton, MD, formerly of Cambridge, died on Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the Talbot Hospice House, Easton, MD. Mrs. Matthews had been a resident of William Hill Manor since 2004.

Born on January 31, 1921 in Cambridge, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Lyle and Emma Wilson Wright.

Mrs. Matthews was raised and educated in Cambridge, where she was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1938.

On August 1, 1943, she married Donald Emerson Matthews in Savannah, Georgia. Mr. Matthews died on May 17, 2004 in Cambridge, Maryland.

Mrs. Matthews was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge where she volunteered as the financial secretary. In 2002, the congregation honored her with the Paschal Candle for her devoted service to the church. Mrs. Matthews was active in the ECW of the church along with Soup Days, Fun Dog Shows and being a Sunday School Teacher.

For many years Mrs. Matthews worked at the Cambridge Court House.

Before her vision failed, she enjoyed gardening and needlework. Mrs. Matthews was known for her willingness to help others in need.

Surviving is her granddaughter Kristin Amanda Newnam of Centreville, MD. Preceding her in death besides her parents and husband was a daughter Dee Matthews Newnam; a son Donald E. Matthews, Jr.; two sisters Emily Wright Pugh and Marguerite H. Wright; and two brothers Henry M. Wright and Jack L. Wright.

Graveside services followed by inurnment will be held at 1:30 on Sunday, August 31st at Greenlawn Cemetery, Cambridge, MD. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Michael M. Reddig, Rector of Christ Episcopal Church.
