Milton Eldon "Jim" Murrell, age 84, of Cambridge, died Thursday evening, December 3, 2009 at Dorchester General Hospital. He had been a resident of Chesapeake Woods for several months.
Born on September 17, 1925 in Toddville, Dorchester County, MD, he was the son of the late Granville Murrell and Rena Jones Murrell. He was educated in the South Dorchester area schools.
Jim, as he was known, worked for JC Penny prior to serving his country during World War II. He served in the US Navy from December 2, 1943 to May 2, 1946 in the South Pacific War Zone aboard the USS Thomas F. Nickel. He was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon (one star), American Theater Ribbons and Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon (one star).
On September 21, 1947 he married the former Sue Foxwell.
During the late 1940's he and his sister-in-law Dot Asplen owned and operated Murrell and Foxwell's Restaurant in Cambridge, MD for many years.
Jim then became employed with the State of Maryland Comptroller's Office. After twenty five years of employment he retired from his position as a revenue administrator. During his career he received several awards from former Comptroller Louis F. Goldstein and former MD Governor Marvin Mandel.
Jim was a member of the White Haven United Methodist Church, Church Creek, MD.
Jim was also an honorary member of Cambridge Rescue Fire Company, a life member of the VFW Post 7460 and life member of the American Legion Post 91.
Jim and his wife Sue enjoyed traveling. They toured most of the United States including Hawaii and also most of Canada.
Surviving besides his wife of 62 years, Sue F. Murrell, is a son Martin Murrell and his wife Patricia; two grandchildren Matthew Murrell and Heather Murrell; a great-grandchild Alyssa Murrell all of Cambridge, MD; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Nancy and R. Quinn Robinson of Church Creek, MD; and a brother-in-law Charles W. Foxwell, Sr. of Cambridge, MD.
Preceding him in death was a son Eldon Thomas Murrell; a sister Ina Murrell; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Dot and Richard Asplen; sister-in-law Alice Foxwell; and two nephews Dorsey Kent Wallace and Romie Q. Robinson, II.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 7th at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Robert Kirkley. Interment will follow in Old Trinity Church Cemetery, Church Creek, MD.
Pallbearers will be Wallace Dodson, Marty Jones, Jay Newcomb, Matthew Murrell, Ernie Fitzhugh and Charles "Buddy" Foxwell, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Wendell Foxwell, R. Quinn Robinson, Timothy Meagher and Charles W. Foxwell, Sr.
