Biography

Phyllis D. Spangler, 87, of East New Market, Maryland passed away Monday, June 1, 2015 at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge, MD. Phyllis was born in Joplin, MO where her father was playing semi-pro football. At a young age she moved to Arlington, VA while her father attended and played football for George Washington University. She graduated from Washington and Lee High School in Arlington, VA and was attending George Washington University where she met her husband Leonard William “Bill” Spangler. Phyllis and Bill were married in August 1947 and spent several years living in Kansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana where Bill was assigned as a special agent for the FBI.
In the mid-1950s Phyllis and Bill moved to Montgomery County, MD where they resided in Olney, Brookeville and Poolesville. Phyllis worked at the Olney Inn Barn Shop where she developed a keen interest in and extensive knowledge of American antiques. Later after Bill retired from the FBI, Phyllis and Bill opened “Another Time Antiques” in Poolesville, MD where they restored and sold antiques. In 1979 Phyllis and Bill moved to Town Point in Cambridge, MD where they continued the restoration portion of their business for several years. In addition to collecting antiques, Phyllis was an avid gardener and loved to read. She also liked to sew, make baskets, and work on artistic crafts. Her primary focus was as a wife, mother and grandmother.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her mother and father, Nell and Harry Deming and her husband Bill. Survivors include, a son and daughter in law of East New Market, Michael and Charlene Spangler, a daughter and son in law of Manassas VA, Susan and Alan Kundrock and three grandchildren Gina, Andrew and Matthew.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015 beginning 1 p.m. at Dorchester Memorial Park, Cambridge. Officiating will be Pastor Pam Bockart.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Phyllis to Baywater Animal Rescue, 4930, Bucktown Road, Cambridge MD., 21613.
