Reginald V. Powley, Sr., 87, of Wingate passed away peacefully Friday, January 31, 2014 at his home. His loving family was by his side.
Born in Wingate on May 6, 1926, he was a son of the late Archie Jones Powley and Thomas R. Powley. He attended the local schools and grew up in a waterman’s family and lifestyle.
On May 22, 1970 Reginald married his wife of 43 plus years, the former Etta Leila Ruark. The marriage brought him great happiness and a son that he cherished.
Mr. Powley and his brother Carlton owned and operated their own seafood business in the 1940’s and early 50’s. After selling the business he continued as a waterman working with his brother Fredrick until his retirement.
He always loved the water, crabbing, fishing and oystering but also he really just loved being outdoors. Sitting on the porch and singing hymns, planting his garden and watching the tomatoes grow all brought great joy to Reginald. Watching his young grandson grow was a joy like no other.
As a life-long member of Wingate United Methodist Church he enjoyed going to church on Sunday and greeting his church family. He will be greatly missed by his family and community.
Surviving are his wife Etta Lee; son Reginald V. Powley, Jr. and grandson Reed V. Powley. Also surviving is his sister in law Emma Powley; brother in laws Elmer Ruark, Joseph Ruark, Luther Ruark, Clarence Ruark and Paul Newcomb; sister in laws Janet Rippons Ruark and Janet Bell Ruark; two special sister in laws Nancy Todd and Bonnie Newcomb; and many special nieces and nephews, too many to mention.
Preceding Reginald in death besides his parents are brothers Edgar Powley, Watson Powley, Carlton Powley, Frederick Powley and Tommie Powley; sisters Roberta Jones, Elizabeth Ritter, Ruby Bloodsworth, Mary Crandell and twin sister Jennette Powley; niece Diane Tolley; brother in laws Frederick Ruark and Warren Todd.
A private graveside service will be held Monday, February 3, 2014 beginning 11 a.m. at the Powley Family Cemetery, Powley Road, Wingate Maryland. Pastor Michael LaClair will officiate.
Serving as pallbearers will be family members.
In lieu of flowers Mr. Powley requested any memorial donations be made to his wife.
Arrangements entrusted to Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A., Cambridge.
