Robert Lee Wheatley, Sr., 96, of Cambridge passed away peacefully at his home with his daughter by his side on Friday, April 1, 2022.
Born in the Neck District on March 19, 1926, Lee was a son of the late William and Sarah Cook Wheatley.
After attending the local schools in the area Lee enlisted in the US Army to serve his country. He was awarded the Good Conduct Metal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
After his honorable discharge he returned home and married the former Norma Lee Todd. Norma passed away in 1989. For most of his working life Lee was a welder. He enjoyed fishing and boating. Lee was a member of the VFW, the American Legion Post #91 and the Cambridge Moose.
Surviving him is his daughter Susan Darlene Thomas, son Robert Wheatley, Jr.; granddaughter Tara Gore; great-grandchildren Sara Gore, Maggie Gore and Ryan Wheatley; niece Carolyn Newcomb and a nephew Jimmy Keyes.
Preceding Lee in death besides his parents and wife are siblings William Russell Wheatley and Anna Keyes.
A funeral service will be held Friday, April 8, 2022 beginning 1:00 p.m. at Maryland Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery Chapel with Military Honors. Officiating will be Pastor George Wheatley, Jr.
