Russell Frederick Schultz, age 77, of Cambridge, MD, died on Sunday evening, May 18, 2008 at home.
Born on November 1, 1930 in Chicago, Illinios, he was the son of the late George Earl Schultz and Lucille Guy Schultz.
On January 13, 1951 he married the former Laura Elliott of Cambridge.
Mr. Schultz served his country for twenty years in the United States Navy during the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts, retiring on October 1, 1968. He served two tours of Viet Nam as a helicopter rescue swimmer, first on the Shangra-La out of Bremerton, Washington, the second tour on the Bon Homme Richard out of North Island, San Diego, California. In 1964 his helicopter squadron out of Ream Field, Imperial Beach, California was sent to do search and rescue operations at Kodiak Island, Alaska following the earthquake and tidal wave. He retired from NAS Alameda, Alameda, California after serving as an aircraft mechanic for the plane of the Admiral of the 13th Naval District. Mr. Schultz also spent time on Kwajalin Island working on planes that flew off of carriers passing in the area.
Mr. Schultz was a Life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7460, and a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1272.
Surviving is a daughter Rebecca Ann Herbert of Woolford, MD; a son Russell F. Schultz, Jr. of Hurlock, MD; a sister Linda Pederson and her husband Dean of Antioch, Ill; a brother Larry Schultz and his wife Pam of Wildwood, Ill; Grandchildren: Mandi Sena of Claymont, NH; Laurie Herbert of Odenton, MD; and Ryan Schultz of Long Beach, MS; and a Great-grandchild Kaiden Sena of Claymont, NH.:
Preceding him in death besides his parents were two sisters Dee Turnpaugh, Shirley Hadad and two brothers William Schultz, and George Schultz, Jr.
The family will receive friends Thursday, May 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m. at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23rd at the funeral home where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Douglas Ridley and The Rev. Ron Meredith. Burial will follow at The Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Hurlock, MD with Military Honors.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Mark Malkus, Charlie Sena, Ron Schultz, Jason Krizmanich, Allen Nelson and Bobby Herbert.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Mandi Sena, Laurie Herbert, Ryan Schultz, Eddie Howard, J.T. North, and Stephen Martin.
In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made in Mr. Schultz’s memory to Cambridge EMT or Baracca Class of Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race St., Cambridge, MD 21613.
