Russell E. Wroten, 84, of East New Market passed away peacefully on Monday, April 14, 2025 at Bayleigh Chase Assisted Living in Easton. He was born in Cambridge on March 2, 1941 and was the son of the late Carl and Thelma Wroten. On December 30, 1962, he married the former Regina Fitzhugh.
Mr. Wroten was Chief of Police for the City of Cambridge from 1971 until he retired in 2001. He graduated from the FBI Academy November of 1971. Over his years of service, he received the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal, Wounded Combat medal,an Exceptional Service Award, and Governor’s Citations. Russell was well respected for his unwavering commitment to his officers and community. In 2024, Mr. Wroten was honored with being the first recipient to be inducted into the Cambridge Police Department Hall of Fame.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Russell was a 50-year member of Cambridge Masonic Lodge #66 and the Boumi Shriners. He was also a past member of the Cambridge Jaycees, Rescue Fire Company, Cambridge Elks #1272 and Grace Methodist Church.
In his retired years, he enjoyed collecting model cars, trucks and airplanes, watching planes especially the Blue Angels, traveling and spending time with his granddaughter and great-granddaughter.
Russell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Regina Wroten of East New Market; their daughter, Christina (Chrissy) and son-in-law, Tom Thompson of Cambridge; granddaughter, Savana (Jon) Linthicum of Rhodesdale; very special great-granddaughter, Arya; and several nephews and a niece. Besides his parents, Mr. Wroten is preceded in death by his brothers; Matthew and George Wroten.
A Masonic funeral service will be held along with the City Police Honor Guard on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 1 pm at Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home in Cambridge with Rev. Steve Bloodsworth officiating. Interment will follow at East New Market Cemetery. Family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Pallbearers will be Tom Thompson, Jon Linthicum, Ronnie Wroten, Donnie Wroten, Matt Elzey and Bruce Jones.
