Virgil W. Ruark, Sr., age 81, of Fishing Creek, MD, died on Monday, November 16, 2009 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, MD, due to complications from an automobile accident Friday night in Southern Dorchester County, MD which also injured his son.
Born on May 18, 1928 in Hoopersville, MD, he was the son of the late S. Warren Ruark and Edith Willahemina Parks Ruark.
On December 25, 1949 he married the former Irma Lee Simmons. Mrs. Ruark died on August 12, 2004.
Mr. Ruark had been a self employed waterman. In 1970 he and his brother Kenneth Ruark bought Charles H. Parks & Company Seafood from Sangston Parks. This business remains in operation and is managed by Kenneth Ruark and Mr. Ruark’s son, Sonny Ruark.
Mr. Ruark was a member of the Hosier Memorial United Methodist Church, Fishing Creek.
Mr. Ruark was one of the founding members of the Hoopers Island Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Chesapeake Bay Seafood Association and had been a member of the Cambridge Moose Lodge #1211.
Surviving is his son Virgil W. “Sonny” Ruark, Jr. and his wife Marie Simmons Ruark, also of Fishing Creek, MD; a brother James Kenneth Ruark and his wife Lola of Fishing Creek, MD, a granddaughter Marcia Pliescott and her husband Woody of Cambridge, MD; three great-granddaughters Allison N. “Allie” Shenton and Josie M. Shenton, Charlette “Charley” Pliescott; a niece Carol R. Jones of Salisbury, MD; two great-nephews Scott Jones and Ryan Jones.
Preceding him in death besides his parents and wife was a brother Charles E. Ruark; grandson Chuck Ruark; and a grandson-in-law C.J. Shenton.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 30th at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., where the family will receive friends two hours prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be The Rev. Doug Ridley and The Rev. Delmer Willey. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Simmons, Jay Newcomb, Harry Phillips, Bryan Hall, Russell “Sonny” Phillips, and Virgil “Sonny” Hobbs, Jr.
