William Anthony Newcomb

William “Billy” Anthony Newcomb of Lakesville, Church Creek, Md passed away on Friday, March 10, 2023. Born on July 5, 1953, Billy was the only child of the late Philip Lee Newcomb and Dorothy Hughes Newcomb.

Billy attended Crapo Elementary School, graduated from South Dorchester High School and attended business school in Salisbury.

Billy worked in the family business, Newcomb‘s Grocery, with his parents. He had a great love for plants, flowers and gardening which led to the family opening Newcomb’s Greenhouse which was the first flower shop in South Dorchester.

After the family business closed Billy delivered medical supplies for Craig’s Home Medical. His later years were spent as a rural mail carrier.

Billy was a member of the South Dorchester Jaycees and the Maryland Militia. He enjoyed volunteering to help his community through the many events conducted by local Jaycees.

He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Golden Hill where he was well known for his chili and fudge made for church events.

Billy had an immense love of animals. Throughout his life he had ponies, dogs and cats as pets. He faithfully cared for many feral cats and enjoyed advancing some to become his indoor companions.

He enjoyed cooking and sharing his delicious walnut fudge with his friends.

While his health allowed, Billy enjoyed setting up at flea markets and community events to sell antiques and collectibles. He made many lasting friendships in all aspects of his working life.

Billy is survived by lifelong special friends Patricia Elzey and Helen Lewis Peel, numerous other dear friends, several cousins and his “baby” RoRo, a former feral.

Billy held the St Jude’s Childrens Hospital close at heart and donated monthly for many years. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in his memory to help the children:
