Maryland Licensed Mortician and Funeral Director
Mr. Gary R. Newcomb is a Maryland professional licensed funeral director and mortician with over 35 years experience in the funeral service industry. He is the President, Owner, and Supervising Mortician of Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A.
Mr. Newcomb began his career in mortuary science in July, 1975, at the Curran Funeral Home, as an assistant and funeral attendant under the direction of Mr. Raymond J. Curran, Sr. In 1984 he began studies to become an embalmer and funeral director at the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville campus. He has been licensed by the State of Maryland since 1988.
His entire adult life has been spent in caring compassionately and tirelessly for the departed loved ones of members of our community at several of the area's funeral homes in preparation for their final memorial. In 1986 he began employment with the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
In his long career as a licensed funeral director and mortician for the State, Mr. Newcomb has skillfully provided dignified and exceptional care and assisted more than 5000 families during their time of loss and mourning.
Early in 2011, Mr. Newcomb and Ms. Collins began negotiations with the owner of Curran Bromwell Funeral Home, Mrs.Colleen Curran-Bromwell, regarding the possibility of purchasing the funeral home from her. The transaction was finalized in December, 2011, and the funeral home became known as Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A.
Mr. Newcomb had served as Manager of the Municipal Utilities Commission of the City of Cambridge. He had been employed with the city since 1975 before retiring in 2012.
A lifelong county resident, growing up on a farm in Southern Dorchester County, Mr. Newcomb chose mortuary science because of his long held interest since youth in biological sciences. Presently he resides in Woolford with his faithful and devoted Rottweiler companion, Velma. Mr. Newcomb has a daughter, Melissa Newcomb Thomas who with her husband Cody have blessed him with two granddaughters, Stella Jane Thomas and Madeline Reed Thomas, who are the joy of his life. His family has always been of utmost priority to him, and he remains a devoted son to his mother, and close to his two surviving brothers. In recent years he has mourned the passings of his father and older brother.
In his spare time, Mr. Newcomb enjoys utilizing his fine carpentry skills on improving his home, and journeying to unknown destinations on his Harley. For many years he played basketball for various county adult industrial and church leagues which earned him the nickname of "Nuke". He continues to have a passion for college basketball and avidly follows the Terps, North Carolina, and Duke on to the road leading up to the Final Four. He enjoys virtually all music, but most especially that of Van Morrison.
Presently, Mr. Newcomb is a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge #1272. He is also a long standing member of the Delmarva Funeral Service Association (DFSA) and the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA). He also is a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Golden Hill.
Maryland Licensed Mortician and Funeral Director
Like Mr. Newcomb, Ms. Barbara Blake Collins (Barbara A. Collins) is a lifelong resident of Dorchester County, and grew up in the North Dorchester area. She is the daughter of Irene Gorski Blake and the late Russell Blake, Sr. She has a brother Russell "Rusty" Blake, Jr. She resided in the East New Market and Secretary area until she moved in recent years to Cambridge. She has long been interested in the funeral service and care industry since a young child and often dreamed of owning her own funeral home. After raising her children into adulthood, she embarked on her education at the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville campus, in order to establish her long awaited career and profession.
Ms. Collins served her apprenticeship to become a mortician under Mr. Newcomb's direction at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., in Cambridge. She has been a professional licensed funeral director and embalmer with the State of Maryland since January 2007. She was associated with the Thomas Funeral Home since June of 2005 until late summer of 2011 when she became employed at the Curran Bromwell Funeral Home.
The two passions in her life are her family and the Baltimore Ravens. She has a son, Walt and a daughter, Kristin. But the supreme joy in Ms. Collins's life is her handsome grandson Blake and lovely grandaughter, Kennedy.
Ms. Collins is the Vice President and Co-owner of Newcomb and Collins Funeral Home, P.A.
Barbara is a lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Secretary, Maryland. She is also a member of the Delmarva Funeral Service Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.
Mr. Samuel B. Yockey is a professional Maryland licensed funeral director with over 12 years’ experience in funeral service. He began his funeral service career in January of 1998 as a funeral service associate at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. Under the direction of Mr. Raymond J. Curran, Sr. and Colleen Curran-Bromwell.
He later began his study to become a funeral director, and graduated from Arapahoe Community College in Denver Colorado with distinction. He has been licensed by the state of Maryland since 2010.
Mr. Yockey remained on staff after the purchase of the funeral home by Mr. Newcomb and Ms. Collins. In addition to his employment with the funeral home, Mr. Yockey was employed by the Cambridge Police Department as a Police Communications Officer II from 1985 until his retirement in July of 2016. Sam had long been interested in the funeral business, and pursued his studies while working at the police department.
Mr. Yockey, a Dorchester county native, grew up in the North Dorchester area, and is a 1981 graduate of North Dorchester High School. He is the son of Yvonne C. (Wheatley) Yockey Veach, and the Late Samuel K. Yockey. He has two brothers, Kevin Yockey and The Rev. David Yockey. He resides in East New Market with his wife Jane and their loving Basset hound “Gunther”.
Mr. Yockey is a Life member of both the Secretary and East New Market Volunteer Fire companies as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician and has held the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Ambulance Lieutenant, and Trustee. He also serves as town councilman for the town of East New Market, and is a member of the Sons of the American Legion #243, Dorchester County Volunteer Firemen’s Association, Delmarva Funeral Service Association, Lower Eastern Shore Mayor’s Association, The National Funeral Directors Association, and The River at Jubilee Christian Fellowship. Mr. Yockey’s passions include gardening, cooking, and music. “I believe that ours is a caring and compassionate profession and that my desire is to assist every person in need and show them that there is hope beyond today” said Mr. Yockey.
